218 - Awelye (Women's Ceremony)
Charmaine paints Awelye (Women's Ceremony) that reflect the dreamtime stories of her country, Atnwengerrp, in the Utopia Region. This land is also significant to her mother and grandmother.
In her artwork, linear designs symbolise Awelye, which are traditionally painted on the chest, breasts, arms and thighs. To create the body paint, women use powders made from red and yellow ochre (clays), charcoal and ash, applying them with a flat stick padded for softness. As each woman takes her turn to be 'painted-up', they sing the songs associated with their Awelye. These ceremonies not only honour their country but also promote the overall well-being and health of their community.
